Nureki Chimuo: Nureki Ryu Shibarikata: 36 tutorials (濡木流縛り方教室 36講座)

in ”SM Select” special issue, March 1988 (縄化粧 小説SMセレクト)

This special issue of SM Select, with its non-spectacular cover, has a spectacular content. More than 200 pages, with 36 Nureki ties, photographed and commented in text, step by step, sometimes in series with more than 20 images for one tie. The tutorials include some suspensions, some hasira-ties, and some using a thin thread.

In addition to the tutorials, which are in black and white (and quite small), there are also sections in full colour of beautiful rope-scenes with Nurekis work.

Ueda Seishiro: Kinbaku Photo Senshu (1971)

Ueda Seishiro: Kinbaku Photo Senshu (1971)

Ueda Seishiro was a (younger) friend of Itoh Seiu.

Ueda was responsible for the tying in a special issue of Yomikiri Romance in the summer of 1952, something Master ‘K’, in The Beauty of Kinbaku, calls this ”the first commercial publication completely dedicated to shibari/kinbaku photography (…) a groundbreaking event in SM publishing”. See my earlier post here: Yomikiri Romance

According to SMpedia, Ueda attended Itohs funeral in 1961.

In the early 1970s, Ueda published a series of photo-book anthologies called ”Kinbaku Photo Senshu” (緊縛フォト選集). In many of the photos, a table is tilted on the side or upside-down and put to good use. I also recognize some of the photos from another publication from the same time-period: Kinbaku-bi. See my earlier posts here: Kinbaku-bi

Here are some examples from three ”Kinbaku Photo Senshu”-books:

エロスの狂宴 (January 1971)

恍惚の美学 (March 1971)

薔薇聖女 (April 1971)

PS

Ueda was also responsible for the bondage in the movie ”Daydreams” (白日夢), directed by Tetsuji Takechi, based on a script by Tanizaki Yunichiro. Please note that there are four versions of ”Daydreams”, from 1964, 1981, 1987 and 2009, Ueda only did the bondage for the 1981-version. It is available (as are many other movies) with English subtitles here: http://japaneiga.free.fr/pinku.html

Kinoko, Hourai & Naka:  緊縛綺譚 (Kinbaku Kitan)

It is rare to find such a concentration of quality in one single publication as is the case here.

Master Kinbaku photographer Sugiura Norio has put together photos from multiple shootings with Kinoko, Hourai and Naka. Pictures capturing something like 20 models doing outstanding work is included.

Biographies of the photographer and the three bakushi are included, as well as individual picture bylines crediting the models, in English as well as Japanese. (Although in a poetic and enigmatic moment, the English bio of Hourai ends with the note: ”Text not translated from the Japanese version of Hourai’s profile above”.)

A4-size, soft-cover, 98 pages, full colour.

Kinoko Hajime: Ichi-go Ichi-e (一期一会)

This amazing ”photo-essay-book” celebrates Kinoko’s 10th anniversary as a rope-artist. And what a decade it has been!

Both a retrospective, and packed with recent works, it features a lot of photos (all in color) – including some exploring the art of flower-arrangements, using the human body as the ”stem” . But, for an english-speaking audience, perhaps the biggest treat is that the whole book is bi-lingual. Kinoko comments on most of the photos, there is a long interview and reflections on his plural styles.

Excerpt from the preface:

”It has been 10 years since I began calling myself ‘Kinoko Hajime’. ‘Ichigo Ichie’ (a Japanese four letter idiom translated as ‘never again’ or ‘once in a lifetime’) is the title of the book, but Kinbaku is also ‘Ichigo Ichie’; you cannot tie the same more than once. The partner you are facing is different each time, and even if you were tying the same partner, you and their feelings will change every day, and the meaning behind the tie will transform as well…”

Roppongi Kaoru: Strange Fruit (1983)

A long time ago already, I made a post about Roppongi Kaoru’s ”Strange Fruits” in the deleuxe edition – a beautiful book in every sense, included on Master K:s shortlist of ”The 10 Greatest Kinbaku Photography Books Ever Published”.

Recently, I got hold also of this ”edited” version, published one year later, in 1983. It is a slimmer volume, not as extravagant in its packaging, but still a very beautiful hardbound book in A4-format. I note also that this later version has the title ”Strange Fruit” without the surprising plural ”-s” that was on the 1982 edition. (”Strange Fruit” is of course the title of a song made famous by Billie Holiday – based on a poem by Lewis Allan from 1937, protesting against the lynching of African Americans.)

Kai-ichi Seda: ともこ 妖しさの彩り

Kai-ichi Seda, born 1933, was active under many pseudonyms (as was many other in SM-publishing of his generation), in this publication he is called ”Yasushi Arakawa”. You can read more about him here: http://www.nawapedia.com/index.php?title=Kai-ichi_Seda

Here, I will just mention that Kai-ichi Seda was working with the Kitan Club magazine in its last phase (1967–1975, as it was published by Akatsuki), and then went on to publish some other smaller magazines, including Sun & Moon where Roppongi Kaoru joined him for the first issues. It seems, Kai-ichi Seda made also several other collaborations with Roppongi Kaoru.

Osada Eikichi: Kinbaku tutorials in SM Spirit Magazine 1993

In 1993, Osada Eikichi published photo-tutorials for seven ties in seven consecutive issues of the magazine SM Spirit [SMスピリッツ ] – number 4–10.

I made an earlier post about issue 6, 7 and 8 here: https://kinbakubooks.wordpress.com/2016/05/18/osada-eikichi-kinbaku-tutorials-in-sm-spirit-magazine-1993/

Now, I have been able to find the missing issues: 4, 5, 9 and 10. The example posted here is from issue 5.

I take the opportunity to mention here also a very rare tutorial DVD by Osada Kazumi (長田一美) from 2004, entitled M女が語る 女性に好かれる縛り方, published by ”Osada Seminar”, that I was able to procure from her personally at a brief meeting during a recent visit in Tokyo.

Also, if you havent already, please listen to the Kinbakunomicon podcast with a reading of a roundtable conversation after Osada Eikichi’s passing, published in SM Sniper. Participants in the conversation: Osada Kazumi, Osada Steve, Saotome Hiromi and Miki Mori:
