Kei Shimoto: Action Book No. 2 (1981)

cover

This small book I found quite entertaining. It was published in a series of ”action books” in 1981. The author goes out to visit a number of SM-related clubs and events. Each of the different venues and organizers gets a few pages of description, the address and phone number is given – and lots photos (some featuring the author himself involved in SM play).

Represented are for example the GSG Project, SAMM, RA-project etc – in other words groups and sites for an underground SM culture with a keen interest in ”performance” and aspects of an avantgarde aesthetics during the early 1980s. As is made clear for example in this interview, it is also a context from which which Akechi Denki emerges as a performer.

Lots of names could be mentioned, but here let me point to the following three, all involved with GSG Planning: Sakurada Denjiro, Shuji Onizawa and Osada Eikichi.

In an interview with Ugo of SMpedia in 2014 (whom I understand has done a lot of reasearch on this), Denjiro Sakurada said that Akechi Denki’s name took [伝], the first part of the name ”Denki” [伝鬼] from Denjiro [伝次郎] and the second part [鬼] from Onizawa Shuji [鬼沢修二]. Osada Eikichi is a central figure on the performance-scene in these years, as can be seen on some of the photos in this publication (see the last series of five pictures in black and white below).

I like to think it offers a kind of snapshot of a period in time, with a distinct flavour.

Osada Eikichi: ”My SM itinerary”, in SM Mania No. 8–12, 1996

In 1996, the magazine SMマニア published a series of articles about Osada Eikichi’s life of SM, illustrated with photos in black and white.

I have made an earlier post about issue No. 10 here:

This rare publication documents the activities of the ”Osada Seminar” from the late 1970s.

32 pages long, it contains photos (both in color and in black & white), a tutorial, and a short text inviting the reader to be a member, describing the activities of the Osada Seminar as regularly doing ”SM theatre”.

Osada Eikichi: Kinbaku tutorials in SM Spirit Magazine 1993

In 1993, Osada Eikichi published photo-tutorials for seven ties in seven consecutive issues of the magazine SM Spirit [SMスピリッツ ] – number 4–10.

I made an earlier post about issue 6, 7 and 8 here: https://kinbakubooks.wordpress.com/2016/05/18/osada-eikichi-kinbaku-tutorials-in-sm-spirit-magazine-1993/

Now, I have been able to find the missing issues: 4, 5, 9 and 10. The example posted here is from issue 5.

I take the opportunity to mention here also a very rare tutorial DVD by Osada Kazumi (長田一美) from 2004, entitled M女が語る 女性に好かれる縛り方, published by ”Osada Seminar”, that I was able to procure from her personally at a brief meeting during a recent visit in Tokyo.

Also, if you havent already, please listen to the Kinbakunomicon podcast with a reading of a roundtable conversation after Osada Eikichi’s passing, published in SM Sniper. Participants in the conversation: Osada Kazumi, Osada Steve, Saotome Hiromi and Miki Mori:

Osada Eikichi : 緊縛の園 (Kinbaku No En, ”The Garden of Kinbaku”) (1980)

This special issue of SMファンタジア(SM Fantasia) from december 1980, is called 緊縛の園, the ”Garden of Kinbaku”

Judging from a glimpse of the bakushi in a few of the images, at least one of the sections features the rope-work of Osada Eikichi. All the images in this blog-post are from that section.

Osada Eikichi in SMマニア

SMマニア (SM Mania) was a Pocket-sized magazine, containing mainly text and adds, but also some illustration and kinbaku-photos.

This issue (no 10 1996) contains some some smaller images with rope by Akechi Denki, and a glossy section with rope by Yukimura Haruki. For the blog, however, I have chosen images from a longer section with rope by Osada Eikichi.

日本緊縛師列伝 (Nihon kinbakushi retsuden)

This book, edited by Sanada Nobuyuki, I found particularly interesting. It presents eight Japanese bakushi with a section of colour images of their work, and interviews: Nureki Chimuo, Akechi Denki, Shima Shikou, Hige, Marai Masato, Naka Akira, Randa Mai and Sayaka.

In addition, it has a few historical sections with black-and-white images by Itoh Seiu… and a couple of pages with images of Osada Eikichi at the Bondage bar in Shinjuku – probably taken at the same time as the images printed in the magazine in my previous blog-post (here: https://kinbakubooks.wordpress.com/2014/08/19/osada-eikichi-in-m女マニアcollector-1999/ )

Osada Eikichi in M女マニアCollector (1999)

It is not easy to find publications with images of Osada Eikichi’s rope-work – his arena was first and foremost stage-performances, not photo-shoots. A comment by Nuit de Tokyo led me to issue 4 of the magazine ”M女マニアCollector” from 1999, that features an article about Osada Eikichi’s friday night performances at the Bondage bar in Shinjuku, with some black-and-white images. Some years ago, Nuit de Tokyo translated the article from ”M女マニアCollector” for the blog Tokyo Bound. I reproduce it below to accompany the images. (Source: http://www.tokyobound.com/blog/?p=270 )

An aside that might interest you is that in his recollections, Osada Steve (then going by the name Dr. D. Vice) tells about this bar being the locus for his first meeting with the person who would become his sensei (here: http://www.tokyobound.com/blog/?p=399).

Initiation to the essence of fetishism

Host: Bondage Bar

Every Friday, fans of SM are congregating to a building across the street from Shinjuku 2-chome (ndt: Tokyo’s famous gay district featuring 300+ lesbian and homo bars).

Here, starting at 8pm sharp, it is show time for Osada Sensei, a grand master of SM for more than 40 years.

Osada Sensei started Osada Seminar in 1975, and represents the quintessence of SM. In particular the kinbaku (緊縛) of Osada Sensei is quick, beautiful and of a high technical level. For the fans, the interest is in the beauty and technique of the master’s tying skills, and the spectacle of a submissive girl, enraptured by the ropes, suspended in the air is an absolutely must-see.

All submissive girls who want to do a session with the Sensei are amateurs. This must be a pleasant way of enjoying the week, one day at a time.

So, what kind of place is the Bondage Bar? During the afternoon, it’s a café with an SM theme. In the evening it’s “pub time” when the real action starts.

There a S girls and M girls, as well as switches on the premises ready to entertain visitors. Customers seeking more intense and private action can retreat to a nearby ”play room” for a session with a woman of their choice – at extra charge, of course.

Every Friday night, Osada Eikichi sensei will give a performance. This time, the model is Miss J. She is wearing a red juban (kimono undergarment) and respectfully kneels before the Sensei . . .

There is theatrical feel to the scene. The fast rope comes out flying, and then, one by one, the layer of clothes covering the body are let go. The red rope envelops the voluptuous body of Miss J in all directions at the same time.

At some point, the right leg of Miss J goes up in the air and candle wax is poured on her thigh. Illuminated by the candle, a black leather whip comes down with a cracking sound.

Miss J now has her two legs up in the air while a pole fixed to her ankles ensures that her legs stay apart. Hips raised, but her shoulders still touching the floor, more red candle wax is poured on the woman’s breast in semi-suspension. The breathing of Osada Sensei and Miss J are now in tune.

As the show approaches its climax, Miss J is now completely suspended and swiveling through the air. Her body is strictly tied.

A mix of pleasure and pain enraptures Miss J, and the Sensei, with all his heart, extends plenty love to the submissive girl with his whip. “Swish . . . swish . . . swish.” With each stroke of the whip, the Sensei roars like a brave lion “Haaar! . . . Haaar! . . . Haaar!” Mixed with the sound of rapid whipping and manly roars are the yelps of the voluptuous Miss J: “Ha-a-aaa, huh-u-huh”.

The show lasts approximately one hour. When I interviewed Miss J afterwards, you could still feel from her the remnants of the intense pleasure and pain she just went through.

Clearly, Osada Sensei is no ordinary person . . .
