Kinoko Hajime: ナワナノ~七菜乃緊縛写真集~

Ropework AND Photography by Kinoko Hajime

Model: Nananano (ナワナノ)

Publisher: 三和出版

ISBN-13: 978-4776913856

This might qualify as Kinoko’s second photo-book. (See a post about the first one here: https://kinbakubooks.wordpress.com/2014/09/01/kinoko-hajime-紅天狗-red-tengu-2014/ )

The book has four sections – Red, Black, Yellow, Green – all with different atmospheres and settings. It also has dense poetic texts on the different colours and scenes.

Large format, high quality paper.

Every now and again, I can’t help myself including some references to DVDs, although this somewhat breaks the self-imposed limitations for the format of this blog (and limitations are surely necessary to keep some kind of quality, as well as limiting the time and effort put down on it). Anyway, this time I include some quick notes on Kinoko’s video-output, as this is a field where it seems he is currently expanding. Of course, I can in no way do them justice with my scribblings, but mainly want to catalogue them here for future reference (and as usual, to make them easier to search for).

For a long time, the only DVD I knew of with Kinoko’s rope-work was the documentary ”Nawa-shi” (縄師) from 2008 (top left on the first image above). It is a quite generous movie with interviews with Kinoko and some of the models, clips from shows, tutorials of some ties, and scenes from the club and other social contexts. (Directed by 広瀬陽, ASIN: B001EXGYJ8)

Since this DVD, there has of course also been made some more recent documentaries, such as the widely seen one by VICE, still available on the Internet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNSXNCaTYl0

In the Fall of 2014, Kinoko released the luxuriously set ”Kinbaku3” (緊縛3), where he ties the famous model Kawakami Yuu. The number 3 indicates that the DVD is part of a series (in ”Kinbaku 1”, Kawakami Yuu is tied by Naka Akira, and in ”Kinbaku 2”, she is tied by Yukimura Haruki). This DVD has been said to represent a public welcoming of sorts of Kinoko to the Kinbaku adult video-scene by putting him side by side with two older masters. I found it very interesting to observe how Kinoko’s tying here contains some clear influences of Yukimura’s and Naka’s (and indirectly Nureki’s, one could argue) styles, but at the same time keeps a very distinct identity in his subjectivity as a bakushi, with his dance-like awareness of his own movements, and the grace of his hands. (Sometimes the power and clarity of his touch makes me remember I read somewhere that Kinoko has training as a chiropractor). (Code: TNH-05)

In Spring 2015, the DVD ”Bakushi-Den 2” (縛師伝 2) was released, with Kinoko tying the model Kumire. This was part of an other high-profile series, this time with Yukimura acting as Director of the movies. Yukimura has a clear presence as an influence on the style of tying (this is, in my view, a VERY sexy movie). Yukimura is also stepping into the movie frame in the last scene, as a kind of a ”making-of”. (The first in this series, ”Bakushi-Den 1” (縛師伝 1), also directed by Yukimura, featured Osada Steve as the bakushi, Iroha Shizuki as the model.) (Code: AKHO-112)

Now, the latest DVD-release by Kinoko, late sumer 2015, is called ”Insomnia” (インソムニア), and features the model Nananano (the same as in the new book mentioned above). Again in a somewhat luxurious and costumey-style, the different scenes use different dramatic locations, sometimes with clear nudges to scenes done on film by earlier masters, while in every case staying distinctly original. (Code: VAN-001)

This is the autobiograhy of Urado Hiroshi. Mainly a text-book, some of the illustrations (mainly from movies) are extraordinary.

Hojojutsu-books from 1930 and from 2015

Hojojutsu-books from 1930 and from 2015

Taneaki Hara (Ed.): ”Keizai Chishoshu”, two volumes (1930)

Two hardbound volumes in carton slipcases, with a golden upper cut. The first of these two volumes contains a reprint of the tractate ”Nawa no Gokui Den”, with 53 two-color sketches of hojo-ties from one particular Ryu. Both volumes deal with a variety of topics, including sexual crimes, punishment and torture in the Edo period.

I typically post only about Japanese books and magazines. However, I want to mention the newly published book ”Hojo Jutsu: L’Arte Guerriera della Corda” by Christian Russo (Torino: Edizioni Yoshin Ryu, 2015). It contains a full 40-page reproduction and translation of the illustrated manuscript ”Nawa Sho”, the ”book of rope” from Seigo Ryu. ISBN: 978-8-8906-0053-1

PS There is now also an English version released of Russos book (only as an e-book): ISBN: 978-8-8906-0055-5

Yasuji Watanabe and Atasushi Sakai: Phantôme Japonais

This beautifully hardbound book is a piece of art in itself. It contains images and texts earlier published in the Japanese magazine SM Sniper (1997–2003) under the headline ”Shashin hyakumonogatari”. The texts (in French) are somewhat lyrical short stories with powerful, sometimes mythological, themes, illustrated with the scenes in the images. The photos are originally in black and white, but have been coloured in afterwards.

Naka Akira: 緊縛写真集 (Rope Artworks) (2014)

This is a rich book. For a change, the photos of Naka’s rope work is not by Sugiura Norio (the only one except Nureki Chimuo that Naka calls ”sensei”), but by Erisa Sato. She has stated that she is interested in a ”relational” aspect of kinbaku – this is perhaps one of the reasons that the book contains quite a few images where not only the tied person is shown, but also the person tying. The bakushi emerges from the shadows… As friends of this blog might have noticed, whenever I have the chance I tend to choose such images wherever I can, but in the publications they are relatively rare.

In addition to the photos of sessions with a number of interesting models (including Gorgone and Iroha Shizuki), the book comes with a DVD. And to top that off, it also has an interview with Naka-san translated into quite readable English, with statements like the following: ”They say that a binding person is sadistic and a bound person is masochistic. When I bind someone however, I put myself into my partner’s position and care about their feeling. I have a feeling that I am not sadistic by nature. I think I am rather masochistic. In fact, I even think that is why I can do that way.”

Publisher: Taiyo Tosho, 2014

PS For anyone who wants to read some other interviews with Naka San, there is a recent one in Spanish from his visit to Madrid here (including a short video):

http://www.elmundo.es/madrid/2014/11/15/54669d5bca4741ee698b457b.html

Also, there is a somewhat longer interview in Su Zume’s new book Pink Kinky: Japan’s Sex Underground (Kingyo, 2014, p. 109–119) – that also has smaller interviews with Kinoko (not quite up-to-date), Hiromi Saotome, and many others. Admittedly somewhat superficial, but gives a nice sneek peek into the night life of Tokyo.

Kinoko Hajime: 紅天狗 – Red Tengu (2014)

This is Kinoko’s first photo-book. It’s imagery shows a great variety of different moods and ties – from his famous ”cyber ropes” to more romantic sections – also featuring poems by Mebu Junichiro (also translated to English in the book).

Naka Akira: 責め縄絵巻 (Semenawa Emaki) (2011)

This 240-page full colour-book shows photos from seven different sessions, previously released on DVD by Murusou Club. (Quite like this one, but in another format: https://kinbakubooks.wordpress.com/2013/11/09/akira-naka-kinbaku-net-vol-1/ ).

One session is together with Naka’s sensei, Nureki Chimuo. Another one is dedicated to Muku Youji – and indirectly maybe also to Nureki, as Nureki very often did the tying that Muku Youji made the images of. In this session, Naka and the model Saki Momoka then use these images as inspiration. Compare my earlier post on Muku Youji’s ”Cards” here: https://kinbakubooks.wordpress.com/2013/07/30/muku-youji-cards/

Preface by Masayuki Kotoh: ”as he kneels in front of the gods Eros and Thanatos, his Kinbaku emanates beauty. His art expresses a level of poetry which approaches the sublime when compared to those around him”.

Includes a DVD.
